About Goblin Squire

You are a lone Squire left behind as you were too young to go off to battle with the army. Goblins have noticed the village is without an army to defend it and are trying to take full advantage. Use your basic sword fighting skills to keep the goblins from destroying your main building. Don't die and you will be rewarded with coins that can be used to improve your abilities. Use wood to build new buildings to gain more resources. Use stone to build towers to help you in your mission. If you fail, no worries, you can start again and try a different strategy. See how far you can get and see what new creatures emerge from the darkness.

My Involvement

I was the sole developer on Goblin Squire, everything in the game was developed by me except for the art assets. Notable features I developed for this project include but are not limited to:

Progression Tree. Players spend earned gold on upgrades that help them with future runs such as increased resource gain, increased damage, increased health, increased movement speed, longer build time, better defenses, and upgrades to the starting hub building.

Wave based enemy spawns. The borders of the map are covered in a dark fog of war. Enemy goblins spawn out of view and navigate into the map at multiple locations. Each round more enemies will spawn and over time new enemy types begin to join the raid.

Enemy AI. There are three types of enemy AI. Standard goblins target the closest building until they see the player within range, then they approach the player at a slow speed and attack once they are close. Scout goblins always target the player, they will sprint at high speeds towards the player, attack, then quickly retreat to a safe distance before targeting the player again. Siege goblins have high health and high damage, they try to focus on attacking buildings but will fight back if the player hits them.

Touch Controls. The game supports multi touch input. Tapping anywhere on the screen will cause the player to attack, holding down anywhere on the screen will create a joystick for movement.

Tile Based Building. During the build phase you can select tiles and choose to build new buildings. Selecting a tile with a building allows you to upgrade or sell it. Some areas on the map provide multiplier boosts to wood production, stone production, and defense strength.

Game loop. A round consists of a build phase and a defend phase. The length of the build phase depends of how many upgrades the player has obtained from the progression tree. You can skip to the start of the combat phase at any time if you are done building. The combat phase will continue until all enemies are defeated. The game ends when the player dies or the starting hub building is destroyed. At the end of each round, the player receives resources based on which buildings are still alive.
